Definition

A blog, according to Merriam-Webster, is “a website that contains online personal reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks, videos, and photographs provided by the writer.”[1] In layman’s terms — think an online journal, often written in a conversational tone with a targeted focus.

Why Do I Need One?

  1. Make Money

I won’t pretend that the biggest question around blogging isn’t how to monetize it, so here it is. The simplest way to make money off a blog is through display advertising (or banner ads). You can also become an affiliate marketer, where you advertise another company’s products and receive a commission fee for every sale your site generates. When you feel ready to sell your own products, digital goods are a great choice. Consider making an e-course available for digital purchase or a paid subscription to your site where subscribers get access to exclusive content.

  1. Share Your Thoughts

Blogging combines the therapeutic nature of journaling and sharing your thoughts with a confidant. It gives you the satisfaction of sorting through your thoughts and organizing them on paper, while also knowing that your story can touch a wide audience. Don’t keep your experiences to yourself; they could deeply resonate with someone.

  1. Market Yourself or Your Company

Blogging is a great way to market yourself to industry peers and future employers. A curated blog on a specific topic helps establish authority and allows you to exhibit your knowledge. It creates an easily accessible portfolio of your work and could be the factor that sets you apart from others.

Similarly, blogging should be a central piece of any company’s marketing strategy. Creating a blog for your business allows you to connect with prospective customers and inform them about your brand. It also allows you to regularly create fresh content with key search terms that will increase your search engine visibility and audience.
